Management: Management is central to any venture's success. The Principals look for teams that have relevant experience, proven success and clear leadership in their chosen field. They will leverage DFJ Portage's extensive network of venture capitalists and portfolio companies to understand everything they can about the individual team members including both their successes and failures.

Market: We look for large market opportunities with compelling need. Sizeable markets approaching several billion dollars are essential to generating superior returns. Additionally, the customer need must be obvious and clearly addressed. We look for markets undergoing significant transformation where new technology and services play a central role.

Rational Business Models: We expect portfolio companies to have rational revenue models with strong margins and a clear path to profitability. Customers must be willing to appropriately pay for the company's offering.

Unique, Defensible Solutions: Successful businesses focus on addressing current and real needs. Portfolio companies must be able to not only clearly identify these needs, but to uniquely address them. Competitive advantage can take many forms including intellectual property, unique processes and personal networks/relationships.
